What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram yoga is a method of yoga that involves a series of 26 postures and two breathing techniques that are performed during a 90-minute class. Practicing yoga regularly has been shown to lessen back pain, sharpen the mind and improve mood—it can even help lower blood pressure.

Practicing Bikram yoga yields many benefits, including flushing toxins from the body through sweat, and it even helps with weight loss. In most Bikram yoga classes, the room is heated — often up to 105°F with humidity between 40 and 60 percent. Because of this high temperature, Bikram yoga is sometimes called hot yoga, but the two are different. Hot yoga refers to any yoga practice done in a hot room, whereas Bikram yoga includes specific poses. The hot temperatures improve blood flow and help oxygen reach muscle tissue, which improves flexibility.

Bikram yoga follows the 80-20 method and the exhalation method of breathing. Using the 80-20 method, practitioners take a full breath, assume a pose and continuously exhale 20 percent of their air through their noses. With the exhalation method, practitioners take a full breath and exhale while holding the pose. Both breathing techniques can be difficult for beginners.

What are the Benefits of Bikram Yoga?

The postures performed during a 90-minute Bikram yoga session are done in the environment of a heated room. Each posture in the sequence is done in specific order, and each posture prepares the body for the next one. The most highly touted benefit of Bikram yoga is its detoxification properties—heavy sweating is said to help flush toxins from the skin. Proponents of Bikram yoga often report improved mental and physical health. Other benefits of Bikram yoga include:

  • Enhanced strength
  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved lung capacity
  • Weight loss
  • Improved appearance of skin

Studies suggest that Bikram yoga increases mindfulness, lowers perceived stress, and improves overall balance and flexibility. By the end of a class, participants will have worked every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, internal organ and gland while systematically moving fresh, oxygenated blood through the entire body. This form of yoga is designed to build strength and improve balance and flexibility by gently stretching and massaging the spine, muscles, tendons, joints and all internal organs of the body.

Is Bikram Yoga Safe?

Bikram yoga poses some potential dangers. The safety of Bikram yoga depends on an individual's fitness level and overall health, among other factors. Exercising in extreme heat can lead to dehydration and hyperthermia, both of which cause nausea, dizziness, fainting, muscle cramping and other symptoms. Generally, if someone starts to feel nauseated, dizzy or otherwise ill during a class, it's a good idea to take a break and drink some water.

Bikram yoga is not recommended for people who have high blood pressure or are pregnant. It's important to take a class that is taught by a qualified Bikram yoga instructor. The instructors are there to guide participants through the postures and makes sure no one is working beyond his or her capacity. Regular practice of Bikram yoga can result in the healing and repair of injuries and illness, weight loss and peace of mind. Request more information about Bikram yoga today.
