What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a technique which uses measurements of activity from different parts of the body to help patients manage and treat their own medical conditions. Once a patient knows how his or her own body is behaving, they can learn to control those behaviors. Controlled behaviors may include therapeutic breathing, meditation, stretching, or flexing.

Biofeedback may also provide data to be used as a benchmark. For example, a patient with depression may have their brain activity measured before beginning a medication regimen. They can collect data again and again over time to monitor their progress and the effectiveness of the treatment.

The main goal of biofeedback is education. By understanding where your body behaves optimally and where it’s lacking, you can take an active approach toward changing these harmful actions. After all the mind does control the body, and by showing the mind where the body needs a little help, the mind can create some induced psychosomatic physiological responses.

What Does Biofeedback Treat?

Biofeedback may be used to diagnose and/or treat conditions such as:

Biofeedback Devices

Electromyograph (EMG): This device uses electrodes placed on the skin to detect and gather data from muscle interactions. Often used to help diagnose chronic pain , hypertension, headaches/migraines, lower back pain , anxiety , and more. An EMG can be used to treat these conditions by practicing biofeedback.

Electrocardiogram (EKG): Electrodes placed on the body measure heart activity. Used to help diagnose seizures and pulmonary embolisms as well as to detect supraventricular tachycardia and signs of a heart attack, an EKG is a very useful tool in biofeedback.

Electroencephalograph (EEG): Brain activity is captured by electrodes placed on the scalp. A complex set of metrics are gathered from the electrodes and interpreted to assist in the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, migraines, OCD, PTSD, and certain forms of seizures. This information is presented as a set of waves on a piece of paper including, Alpha, Beta () Theta and Delta waves. Severe ADHD will probably show little -wave activity on an EEG.

Electrodermograph (EDG): An EDG uses electrodes on the hands, wrists, or fingers to measure the conductance and potential of electrical activity on the surface of the skin. The information from an EDG can be used to treat anxiety and excessive sweating with biofeedback.
