Hypnosis has long been shrouded in mystery in skepticism. Can someone really be convinced to moonwalk across a stage or cluck like a chicken? Beyond that, can a hypnotist really help those with unhealthy lifestyles make lasting change? In short, the answer is “yes.”

Under hypnosis, a person enters a state of heightened concentration in which they are subjectable to the suggestions of the hypnotist. However, before we dive further into the science of hypnotism and its therapeutic applications, it may be best to clear up some myths.

Common Hypnosis Myths

Myth: Hypnosis Isn’t Real

One of the biggest reasons hypnosis has received such a great amount of skepticism is due to its use as a performance piece. Stage hypnotists may use real hypnotic induction techniques to suggest certain actions to audience members. However, there are many instances where performers use actors or secretly ask audience members to cooperate in order to produce seemingly extreme hypnotic suggestions.

Myth: Anyone Can Be Hypnotized

Hypnosis works better on some than on others but it cannot be expected to work on someone not willing to cooperate with the hypnotist. Many skeptics are not able to sufficiently clear their minds and trust in the suggestions of the hypnotist. This makes it difficult (if not impossible) to successfully achieve hypnotic induction.

Myth: You Can Be Hypnotized To Do Anything

Perhaps the quickest proof of hypnosis in action is by suggesting a hypnotized person perform an action that is out of the ordinary, but not extreme. For example, a hypnotized person is much more easily directed to do a tiny dance than they are to believe they are Marilyn Monroe. The more extreme the suggestion, the more likely it is that the suggested action will not be performed.

So, How Does Hypnosis Work?

Every session of hypnosis begins with a pre-induction talk. The hypnotist will gauge a person’s preexisting knowledge of hypnosis, their past experience with being hypnotized and what they can expect from the session. Next, the hypnotist will proceed with the induction. The subject should be comfortable and relaxed. They may sit or stand. They are next asked to focus their eyes and thoughts on an object in front of them. This is achieved using a variety of methods (and not just with a swaying pocket watch as cartoons would suggest).

The focusing exercise is what is primarily used to induce a state referred to as a “hypnotic trance.” The hypnotist uses a calm and soothing tone to communicate with subjects as they are guided into their trance. It is at this point that a hypnotist will provide a series of suggestions for the subjects to follow. Different methods or phrases are commonly used to suggest different actions. Once the hypnotist has provided the subject with suggestions, they may conclude the session.

The subject is brought out of their hypnotic trance, often using a prompt known as a “cancellation.” This often consists of the hypnotist asking the subject to “wake up” after the count of five. Failing to successfully perform any steps of hypnosis once a subject has entered a hypnotic trance can cause physical and psychological damage. Because of this, performing hypnosis without the proper training and experience is not advised.
